The overarching objective of this work is to design and formulate a novel class of poly (amic) acid (PAA) polymer with excellent biodegradability, enhanced electroactivity, ease of processability and uninterrupted electron conjugation. This work relies on the hypothesis that: (i) the selective choice of monomers can yield a formulation with uninterrupted electron delocalization, and (ii) continuous electron delocalization will result in superior electro-activity conductivity, crystallinity and UV-activity compared to the conventional polymers. The classical PAA formulated from 4'4-oxydianiline (ODA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) is limited by its amorphous nature as well as the presence of the C-O-C bond in the polymer chain that hinders its continuous electron conjugation. This work reports the design, preparation and novel applications of a new PAA formulation- Poly (pyromellitic dianhydride-p-phenylene diamine)-PPDD. In accordance with hypothesis (ii) the new formulation possesses enhanced properties such as higher electro-activity, semi-crystallinity, higher UV-activity biodegradability and reduction properties. PPDD was tested for possible application as a sensing platform for nitrobenzene, with the resultant sensor exhibiting the following figures of merit: good sensitivity (7.88 µA µM-1), low LOD (1.68 µM), a wide linear range (10-600 µM) and minimal interference effects from nitroaromatic compounds and metal ions (less than 8%). PPDD was also applied as a reduction and directional template in fabrication of anisotropic nanoparticles (peanut shaped, nanorods and dendritic structures). Its water soluble form was also used to direct growth of SERS active gold nanoflowers, with tunable LSPR extending to ~1000nm. Perhaps what is most unique about this work is the development of a greener approach in nanofabrication of SERS active gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) using water soluble PPDD as reducing and directing agent. The as-synthesized AuNFs exhibited localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks that can be can be modulated from ~530 nm to ~750 nm of the spectra by tailoring the length and density of the branches using varying ratios of PPDDs to HAuCl 4.3H2O.
