Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references
Inspired by the increased presence of tattoo parlors and tattooed clients in East Los Angeles, this project focuses on the social world of tattooing. This thesis attempts to answer the ways that the tattoo cultivates one's self-concept and how participants (tattoo practitioners and their clients) define and legitimize the activity as part and parcel of a larger social movement. Findings were drawn from formal structured interviews, field research, and informal interviews. Findings indicate that the increased visibility of tattoo parlors and tattooed persons may be attributed to the acceptance and legitimization of this practice through a broadening set of what Herbert Gars describes as "taste cultures" and the relative decline of negative social judgments. Thus, the tattoo creates a self-concept, which is reinforced by one's taste culture.
