A common way for dogs and humans to be active together is through dog walking. Dog walking research thus far has predominantly focused on human-centric goals such as increasing human physical activity (PA). Dog walking has had mixed success as a PA intervention, however has been suggested to support maintaining PA throughout the year especially through PA decreases in winter. This work explores supporting winter dog walking through providing pet guardians with a snapshot of their recent dog walking behavior compared to similar dogs. We first present dog walking trends from 2018-2021 derived from a dataset of over 100,000 dogs with electronic health records and objective behavior data gathered by dog activity trackers. Our findings highlight walking behavior differences by dog demographics and seasonal variation. We then conducted an ecological momentary assessment study (n=121) to capture near real-time winter dog walking challenges along with the social and environmental context to inform a prototype design. These findings provided the basis of a dog walking snapshot prototype that was iterated on with users via a survey study (n=55). Finally, we conducted a reversal (ABA) study (n=131) for 6 weeks to assess the impact of the prototype on winter dog walking. The findings across all studies spur discussions on the winter dog walking experience, provide consideration for conducting winter studies, and indicate future design opportunities for supporting winter dog walking.
