Mothers are particularly susceptible to body image-related concerns because of the physical and psychological changes that accompany pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Social media use seems to negatively impact maternal body image, which may result in mental, emotional, and physical health complications. Mothers (n= 94), ranging in age from 20-45, who CrossFit and use either Facebook and/or Instagram were recruited via email and social media posts. They filled out an online survey containing the Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) - which measures an important facet of positive body image, and the Social Networking Sites Usage & Needs Scale (SNSUN). These are both validated scales. They also answered questions related to their participation in CrossFit. Mothers varied in frequency, length, and skill level for CrossFit. The data were analyzed, and assumptions were met for a multiple regression analysis to be carried out. The results indicated that CrossFit was associated with higher levels of functionality appreciation. As CrossFit skill level, frequency, and length increased, functionality appreciation also increased. Social media use was inversely related to functionality appreciation. Due to these results, it is recommended that healthcare providers and mental health professionals encourage mothers to participate in physical activities (like CrossFit) that are likely to increase their levels of functionality appreciation. It is also recommended that they educate mothers on how to use social media in a manner that is protective of body image. Even though Facebook and Instagram use is part of daily life for most mothers, and even though these sites tend to negatively influence mothers' body images, they can use practical tools like CrossFit (or other exercise programs) that emphasize functional appreciation to negate the harmful effects.
