This thesis contends that revitalization in the church's spiritual life comes only when the church lives up to its original purpose, that of being the community of faith and the trustee of the means of grace. The church fulfills its purpose when it becomes involved in outreach which affects the lives of people both in and beyond the local church. The approach to this problem of revitalization and renewal within the church was made through a study of John Wesley's doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Wesley maintained that the Holy Spirit is active in people's lives only as they provide an outlet for it in terms of outreach to other people. He said people are justified and sanctified by faith, but they are made perfect only in love. The Holy Spirit binds justification, sanctification and perfection together, according to Wesley. People reach perfection in life when they come to have the mind and spirit of Christ, and, then, perform in their living good deeds which Christ himself did. The Holy Spirit is that active agent which works to bring people to the point of spiritual maturity in their lives. Faith and works are connected in Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection, with perfection being the goal of all Christians in their spiritual pilgrimage; but there is no way to attain perfection apart from doing good deeds to help people to experience a better quality of life on this earth. And this quality of life includes both the spiritual and the physical dimensions. The study revealed that people are very much interested in the theology of John Wesley. And they want to see the application of his thought to our present day situation. An emphasis on Wesley's theology appears to be long overdue in the United Methodist Church. A study of Wesley's doctrine of the Holy Spirit can renew and revitalize the life and the spirit of the church today. The seed are both good and effective. If the soil is productive, and if the seed are planted carefully, then the seed have the power to accomplish the task.
