The response to strong earthquake motions of R/C structures with columns flexurally weaker than beams (SBWC) is investigated in a combined experimental and analytical study. Two small-scale models (total height of 84 3/8 in.) were constructed and tested on an earthquake simulator. The structures comprised two nine-story, three-bay frames that acted in parallel. The principal variable was the amount of longitudinal reinforcement in the columns (2.9% and 4.7% steel for the first-story columns of the first and second specimens, respectively). The structures were subjected to a single component of a known acceleration record (El Centro 1940 NS), and in-plane accelerations and displacements were measured at each level. A lumped parameter MDOF model was developed and used to interpret observed test specimen response. Of primary interest in the study were (1) the story force-displacement primary curve, and (2) the set of hysteresis rules. The analytical model was also used in a parametric study to broaden the scope of study. Variables in the parametric study were: ground motion, frame profile, structure strength, and story force-displacement representation.
