This dissertation is an ethnographic investigation into the social construction of intimacy, gender and power in strip clubs. It addresses conceptual questions about agency and control in gendered interactions. It asks the following questions: What are the interactive consequences, both intended and unintended, of stripper-customer encounters? How are tipping, table dancing, and conversational interactions framed and constructed? How are impression management and emotion work used in the creation of these interactions? How do these encounters challenge or support cultural expectations of masculinity? This study is based on data collected during open-ended interviews with twelve strippers, informal conversations with customers and also from 100 hours of participant observation as a customer in two New England strip clubs. Participant observation was generally conducted in two or three hour sessions. Interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. This dissertation finds that customers pay for attention and intimacy as much as for sexual arousal. It argues that stripper-customer interactions reinforce key aspects of culturally defined masculinity by rewarding men's financial contributions to women with erotic attention. In addition, it offers a feminist-interactionist alternative to structural-feminist conceptualizations of sex-work by concluding that strippers participate in subjectification rather being victims of objectification.
