The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), released in 2015, provided a world framework for the improvements needed in order to ensure a sustainable future for all. The 17 goals that make up the SDGs span anywhere from social and security concerns, to climate change and resiliency, to peace and economic prosperity. All countries are encouraged to use and support the SDG, including the United States of America. Realizing the broad implications of the SDGs, large multi-national corporations have attempted to incorporate the SDGs into their strategic planning and day to day operations. These companies realize that the world is changing, and that the SDGs are the roadmap to where we are all headed, they can either get onboard or be left behind. American universities pride themselves on educating the leaders of tomorrow. They have historically responded to changes in the world by modifying or adding to their curriculum offerings to ensure students graduate with the best chance of succeeding in the workforce. Given that, it only makes sense that higher education in America incorporate, as some multi-national corporations have, the SDGs into their education and operations. But the SDGs were not written for universities to implement, they were written for nations. This thesis attempts to show how a university might seamlessly integrate the UN SDGs into campus strategic planning through coordinated assessment, metrics, and organizational alignment, with the goal of producing a plan outline that represents not only the SDGs, but the University's priorities and culture.
