Death anxiety has been extensively studied, but relatively little is known about the specific death-related fears of middle-aged Americans, as most studies have examined younger or older adults or relied upon unitary measures, which lack the specificity of multifactorial instruments, to assess death anxiety. The present study was undertaken to investigate the influence of gender, age, depression, and health upon middle-aged Americans' fear of death using the Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale (MFODS). Demographic variables included partnered status, parental status, religious affiliation, and recent death of a loved one. Participants were also assessed for depression, self-rated health, number of medical conditions, health-related distress, and health-related activity limitations. The sample included 114 community-dwelling adults (72 females, 42 males) age 40 to 64 (M= 51.1, SD = 7.1). Results indicate that gender did not have a main effect on overall MFODS scores or on six of the eight MFODS subscales. Of the remaining MFODS subscales, women had significantly higher Fear for Significant Others than did men, while men reported greater Fear of the Unknown than did women. Younger age, poorer self-rated health, and higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with greater fear of death. No relationships were found between death anxiety and health distress, activity limitations, or the number of medical conditions. A MANCOVA found that younger age was significantly associated with two MFODS subscales, Fear for Significant Other and Fear of Premature Death, while the remaining covariates did not significantly influence MFODS scores. Three variables accounted for about one-fifth of the variance in MFODS scores, including depression (10%), self-reported health (5%), and age (3%). The present findings are discussed in terms of limitations, recommendations for future research, and implications of death anxiety among middle-aged Americans.
