Contemporary relationships are highly diverse and people are often unclear on how to define their relationships, what they can expect from their partners, and how they should act. Studies have linked relationship uncertainty to negative psychosocial outcomes. However, existing measures have significant limitations and are inappropriate for assessing ambiguity within newer dating relationships or the undefined partnerships common in emerging adulthood. This research sought to address this gap by developing and providing initial validation for the Relational Ambiguity Scale (RAS). In Study 1, we examined the factor structure and item loadings using data from 144 college students currently involved in ambiguous partnerships. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a four-factor structure: Own Ambivalence, Partner Ambiguity, Behavioral Norm Uncertainty, and Exclusivity Uncertainty. In Study 2, we sought to replicate these findings in a more diverse sample of 233 emerging adults recruited online, evaluate the psychometric properties of the RAS, and test its associations with psychosocial outcomes. Results of a confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor, 24-item structure of the scale, with all items loading highly on the expected subscales and good model fit. The RAS and its subscales demonstrated excellent reliability and validity, and did not have the problematic floor effects or low variability present in previous measures. Regression analyses indicated that higher relational ambiguity was associated with lower relational competence and self-esteem, and higher stress, substance use, depression, and anxiety. The RAS enhanced our ability to predict these outcomes, beyond demographic variables and global/trait-like relationship constructs. Findings support the use of the RAS as a valid and useful measure of ambiguity within the modern relationships of today's young adults and highlight the importance of continued research on this construct given its association with negative psychosocial outcomes.
