This study examines education in a traditional Native American community. Community values and beliefs in regards to schooling/education at Zuni are addressed in the context of the community's educational reform efforts. The study reviews the process for community empowerment through a focus on the development, implementation, and analysis of a community survey in the Pueblo Indian reservation of Zuni in New Mexico. Such an undertaking requires the examination of three areas of research. The first examines the theory that supports the notion that the development of any community is tied to the development of their children. The second area of emphasis is methodological research that can be empowering and meaningful in community developmental research. The third area is community psychology research for the development of effective educational programs. The survey's sample was 200 randomly chosen participants from the Zuni community. Their age range was 21 to 103 years old. Overall, the findings show that the Zuni community is in strong agreement on the type of curriculum, educational activities, and developmental path that they want for their children. Also, the community is in agreement that education at Zuni should be contextualized and connected to the community values and practices. They are also of the opinion that culturally compatible strategies for teaching and learning should be enacted during classroom activities in order to foster what they believe to be appropriate development.
