The present study attempted to address the relationship between one type of continuing bond, sense of presence of the deceased, and adjustment to conjugal bereavement in a sample of older adults. Specifically, the study investigated whether or not causal effects exist between the sense of presence bond and the grief-related symptoms, grief severity and depression, and how these variables affect change in each other over time. Grief severity and depression were measured using the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief (TRIG), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) respectively. The data analyzed in this study were taken from an archival dataset. The sample consisted of 228 elderly bereaved spouses. Data were collected through structured interviews and self-report questionnaires 2, 7, 13, and 33 months after the loss. The 2 main research questions that were addressed in this study were aimed at discovering (1) what causal effects, if any, exist between sense of presence and grief-related symptoms; (2) what are the longitudinal dynamics, if any, of the relationship between sense of presence use and grief-related symptoms. Both questions were addressed using structural equation modeling (SEM), the first question with nonrecursive path models, and the second question using cross-lagged panel analysis. Sense of presence was analyzed as a latent variable combined from frequency and helpfulness data. Results indicated that grief severity had a causal effect on sense of presence of the deceased spouse, but there was not a causal effect in the other direction. Causal effects were not found between sense of presence and depression. Results from the cross-lagged panel analyses showed that grief severity affected change in experienced sense of presence over time. Those in the sample who had more intense grief early on following the death of a spouse showed a greater shift towards experiencing less of the sense of presence continuing bond over time relative to those who were lower in grief severity. Results are discussed in light of previous research findings on continuing bonds and adaptation to bereavement. Limitations of the current study and directions for future research are discussed, with a focus on the complexities of the sense of presence continuing bond expression.
