Attachment research posits that the internal working model, or one's mental representation of self, others, and the world, exists across all relationships. The current study bridged the gap in the literature between developmental psychologists and social psychologists by exploring the continuity of the internal working model through romantic adult attachment styles, romantic caregiving, and parent-child caregiving representations. Grounded in Bowlby's theory of attachment continuity that suggests one's internal working model remains relatively stable across time and contexts, the current study similarly holds that one's mental representation of attachment security and receiving and providing care will remail stable throughout romantic and parent-child relationships. The study hypothesized that a secure attachment style will positively correlate with a secure romantic caregiving representation and a secure parent-child caregiving representation, and that an insecure adult attachment style will positively correlate with an insecure romantic caregiving representation and insecure parent-child caregiving representation. Results demonstrated a confirmation of the hypotheses, in that secure attachment styles are correlated with secure caregiving representations.
