Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), is a ubiquitously used sensing technique implemented in the detection of important molecules like biomarkers, drugs, toxic chemicals and etc. Inelastic scattering of light due to molecular vibrational modes is the fundamental principle in raman spectroscopy. Certain molecular vibrations result in very distinct and narrow spectral features which serve as a fingerprint for a molecule and help in its identification. Implementation of plasmonically-active noble metals like silver, gold, and platinum can drastically enhance raman signals. This enhancement is immensely dependent and varies proportionally to the 4th power of the local field enhancement. Nanostructures fabricated on substrates using plasmonically active noble metals can result in an increase of 10e6 times in the efficiency of raman scattering. In this work, a liquid metal-based SERS sensor is proposed which can be fabricated with comparatively less sophistication and is cost-effective to produce.
