Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2023.

My work questions how a person belongs and identifies with multiple cultures, through their individual interaction with group memory, language and tradition. It begins with asking about the concept of the 'mother tongue' and the complicated negotiation a 'third-culture kid' has with the language of their parents and grandparents; can one lose one's mother tongue? If so, how do they get it back? The author's personal engagement with nostalgia, loss and madness multiracial heritage is related to early Chinese Daoist beliefs about 'the usefulness of the useless' (in particular sourcing from Fung Yu-Lan's A Short History of Chinese Philosophy and the Burton Watson translation of the Chuang-Tzu), as well as Mary Oliver's final poetry collection, A Thousand Mornings, which considers youth, the afterlife and joy in death. Finally I relate my work to Jennifer Bartlett's large scale paintings and Sally Manns' Tree series.
