The objective of this research was to investigate the mechanical behavior of Divinycell PVC H100 foam under cyclic triaxial loading in order to address plastic deformation and hysteresis of sandwich panels with polymer foams cores. Composite sandwich structures with polymer foam cores has widespread applications because of their high stiffness, strong strength and low weight. For the application in navy ships, sandwich panels with more ductile foam core can offer better blast resistance than panels with stiffer and stronger foams because of the associated energy dissipation due to core crushing.A pressure vessel experiment was developed to determine the multiaxial, elastic-plastic and hysteresis behavior of Divinycell PVC H100 foam. Arcan butterfly and tensile dogbone specimens were encased in the air chamber of a cylindrical pressure vessel, which was designed to work within an MTS servo-hydraulic machine. Digital Image Correlation was used to measure strains in the specimen during the experiments. Material tests under cyclic loading of the foam under uniaxial compression and tension, shear, biaxial compression and shear, triaxial compression, triaxial compression-tension and triaxial compression and shear, were performed in both out-of-plane and in-plane directions of the foam. The foam, which was transversely isotropic, exhibited elastic-plastic response followed by damage and viscoelastic hysteresis. Compared with the Hill, Hoffman and TDFC (Tagarielli-Deshpande-Fleck-Chen) failure criteria, the Tsai-Wu quadratic failure criterion, with its 12 material constants, was the best to predict the correct yield behavior under triaxial stress states. The foam produced hysteresis due to viscoelasticity when it underwent the unloading and reloading cycles. A material model was proposed to describe viscoelastic hysteresis, damage and plasticity of PVC H100 foam, which would be used for the development of three-dimensional model to predict the underwater blast performance of composite sandwich structures.
