This study puts forth an analytical or computational framework with which one may analyze vibratory power flow in a built-up structure on a narrow band basis. The proposed method incorporates component synthesis techniques, one based on mobilities the other on component modes, in the context of a canonical source-path-receiver model. A multi-dimensional compliant and dissipative massless joint is assumed in the formulation, and the harmonic excitation is assumed to be only within the source component; it is also assumed to be independent of the system properties. The modal based approach is ideally suited to study the power dissipated within each component while the mobility approach lends itself to the study of transmitted power through joints. Since the proposed techniques have been found to be sensitive to modal truncation errors, special analytical and computational algorithms are devised (with emphasis on static completeness) to minimize such errors. A new method characterizing the source structure by Lanczos vectors, and the receiver by constrained component modes is proposed and demonstrated using T-beam and plate-beam structures. The coupled translation-rotation path is found to be substantial thereby warranting its modeling in our original formulations. A simplified gearbox, with rigid casing and compliant mounts and shafts is also considered, and appropriate modeling issues are addressed. Furthermore, parametric studies reveal the effect of system asymmetries on power flows. Finally, new approaches to model the bearing-plate interface are presented. The problem of the bearing stiffness matrix is re-examined in the context of ball or roller bearings being located in a compliant casing. It is observed that a refined static synthesis procedure is necessary. The advantages of computing spatial power or energy flux distributions at any mode or frequency of interest, for complex assemblies are demonstrated by using the plate-beam structure. A new technique to calculate structural intensity and dissipated power density in plate-like structures is developed which includes both in-plane and out-of-plane (flexural) motions. The introduction of modal dissipation efficiency is particularly helpful in understanding the dynamic behavior of the built-up assembly.
