Innovative work behavior (IWB) is a topic largely studied in the field of business because it looks at outcomes and processes. IWB also provides an understanding for how businesses can stay competitive and provides insight to employee's needs to be active participants in the workplace. While there is much data regarding innovative work behavior from the perspective of managers, limited literature is available to support the topic from the employee perspective. Implicit leadership theory served as a framework for this study and a generic qualitative inquiry with one-on-one interviews was used to help answer the research question of what the experiences of bankers in the banking industry are and how managers support their innovative work. The population consisted of bankers in a financial institution in Los Angeles. The sample was represented by five women and five men, totaling ten participants in the data set. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA software to assist in the thematic analysis of identifying patterns and themes presented by the subjects. Following the thematic data analysis, five total themes emerged (a) being thought of as a leader, (b) not being micromanaged, (c) working as a team, (d) having open dialogue and, (d) positive reinforcement. The findings of this study may help business leaders get more IWB from their employees by incorporating these themes in their day-to-day management.
