We live in an increasingly digital economy. Social scientists who study this economy have tended to emphasize how companies compete to maximize the extraction of profits from data. Yet, while this focus on competition and profit maximization is correct and important, it is insufficient to understand the digital economy. This dissertation proposes the novel concept of "open-source capitalism" to understand a dynamic of the digital economy that enables cooperation and an open-ended relationship to profit. The dissertation then uses the concept of open-source capitalism to explain the rise of machine learning, a set of techniques that inductively extract patterns from data. Machine learning is pervasive across companies and industries. The McKinsey Global Institute estimated in 2022 that about one out of two companies used machine learning in at least one business function. Relying on trade press, archival documents, qualitative interviews, and survey data, this dissertation argues that open-source capitalism enabled the rise of machine learning. Companies have experimented with machine learning since the mid-1990s but have often been frustrated by the returns they have obtained. However, corporations continue to invest in machine learning because they adopt an open-ended relationship to profit. Firms have invested in machine learning because they see the technology as intrinsically valuable and because they hope to be well-positioned for a longer-term, uncertain future. Further, cooperation is behind the spread of machine learning during the 2010s. Companies developed machine learning relying heavily on open-source software and digital platforms, which embody and enable cooperation between businesses.
