This hermeneutic study examines the impact of the Internet on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth in relation to the prevalence of suicide attempts among this population. Cyberbullying can occur on popular social media sites accessed regularly by LGBT youth in America, and many LGBT youth have been harassed regarding their sexual orientation and become cybervictims, leading some to take their own lives. These sites' policies for the safety of users are reviewed along with support resources accessible to youth online for prevention of suicide. Principles of attachment theory and self psychology are applied in addressing the vulnerability of LGBT youth to cyberbullying and the risk of suicide. A psychological understanding of both cyberbullies' motivations and cybervictims' propensity for suicide can help to educate clinicians and families of LGBT youth.
