Circa 450 B.C., Herodotus of Halicarnassus wrote Histories. In it, he was searching for the origin of the conflict between the Greek people and the Persian Empire. However, many scholars disagree with Herodotus' accounts of the events and of his conclusions. In the first century A.D., Plutarch wrote de Malignitate Herodoti , which criticized both Herodotus' work and the historian himself. Plutarch accused Herodotus of maliciously slandering the Greeks while unfairly praising the Persians. Plutarch was a Greek, living under the Roman Empire. He was greatly offended by what Herodotus wrote. In the first paragraphs of his work, Plutarch establishes criteria for a malicious author, later he attempts to prove that Herodotus fulfills all of these standards. In order for him to prove his accusations against Herodotus, Plutarch must falsify his evidence or take it out of context and misconstrue its meaning. The charges that Plutarch leveled against Herodotus are baseless.
