There is a growing exploration of the relationship between social networking sites and body dissatisfaction. Women of all ages engage in social networking sites, however there is a paucity of research which seeks to understand the correlation between active time on social networking sites and body dissatisfaction throughout the lifespan. This study utilized social comparison theory and the tendency to compare oneself upward and downward to others on social media to understand the relationship between active time on social networking sites Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat and body dissatisfaction. A survey of 310 female-identified women between the ages of 18-43 was conducted between November 2019-February 2020. The survey consisted of demographic collection, body dissatisfaction as measured by the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), and tendency toward comparison as measured by the Upward and Downward Physical Appearance Comparison Scales (UPACS/DACS) The study had three hypotheses: the amount of active time spent on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat will be positively correlated with a higher body dissatisfaction score; women in age group 31-43 will not differ significantly in terms of body dissatisfaction when compared to women in age group 18-30; women who score higher in upward and downward comparison, across ages, will have higher rates of body dissatisfaction. Findings indicated a moderate positive correlation between higher body dissatisfaction scores and upward comparison tendency (r = .555), as well as downward comparison (r = .415). The study found that women in both age groups produced similar scores on the body shape questionnaire. Finally, the study found weak but positive correlations between active time spent on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat as measured by number of friends, activities engaged in, daily posting, daily time, and passive open and scrolling.
