In the U.S., the aging population and dementia were on the rise (World Health Organization, 2020). Due to the demanding nature of dementia caregiving and the added strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, care facilities faced staff recruitment and retention issues (Dobbs et al., 2020; Gardner et al., 2020). Research on the perspectives of formal caregivers working in assisted living care facilities was limited (Snyder et al., 2021). This research sought to give voice to those caregivers. Through semi-structured interviews with 15 formal caregivers, the researcher gained insight directly from this frontline care staff. Using a Stress Process Model (Noonan & Tennstedt, 1997) framework, the researcher examined formal caregivers' experience level (i.e., new versus experienced) and its impact on their defined well-being. The researcher hypothesized that new and experienced caregivers would give meaningful differences in responses to interview questions. Qualitative analysis revealed significant differences in responses concerning five main themes: stress, support, understanding of dementia, coping methods, and role mastery. The researcher also found significant results related to experience and suggested the potential addition of caregiver experience as a coping resource in the Stress Process Model. Supporting the well-being of formal caregivers was crucial as the quality of care for older adults with dementia relied firsthand on them. This research could aid care organizations in best supporting their vital yet poorly understood workforce.
