In 2018, an estimated 5.6 million individuals aged 65 and older were diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia, a form of major neurocognitive disorder (MND; Miyawaki et al., 2020). Providing care for those with MND is often a physically and emotionally taxing task, which can negatively impact caregivers. Recent literature emphasizes that family caregivers (those who provide care to family members) develop increased levels of caregiver stress compared to their formal counterparts (Reuben et al., 2019). Recent research has focused on different types of interventions or supports to assist informal caregivers and reduce the development of caregiver stress. The study objective was to evaluate the effect supportive services offered by nurse practitioners to caregivers had on the development of caregiver burden over time. Participants are a subset of subjects (n = 121) from a more extensive database based on archival, non-experimental data collected from medical records. All caregivers were administered Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaires (NPI-Q) at two different time points. Results from a Mixed ANOVA revealed no significant findings between or within groups when examining the development of caregiver stress, suggesting that further research is needed to understand better potential supports offered by nurse practitioners that may impact the development of caregiver stress over time. The correlational analysis found strong positive correlations between the severity of symptoms and levels of subjective distress as measured by the NPI-Q, which is consistent with the original analysis (Kaufer et al., 2000), suggesting good test-retest validity, warranting continued use with caregivers.
