Thesis (M.S.)--New York University Tandon School of Engineering, 2024.
Includes bibliographical references
Currently, the population of adults over the age of 65 in NYC is 1.74 million people, which is projected to reach 1.86 million people by 2040 (NYC Department for the Aging, 2022). Many of these older adults face age-related challenges, such as decreased mobility or cognitive function, loss of independence, and increased social isolation. To support the aging population, resources should be available to cater to their unique needs. These resources include the people, services, and communities in place that improve the quality of life for older adults in NYC. Such resources enable older adults to address their health, financial, and social needs. The thesis explores the resources that are available to older adults in NYC and examines how accessible and useful they are. The research revealed that despite there being a wealth of resources, they are not always known or accessible to older adults. As a result, the purpose of the Aging in NYC app is to provide a resource hub for older adults looking for various services and resources, ranging from finding accessible transportation to joining a social community. The research explores how to make these resources more accessible and useful for older adults, empowering them to take advantage of existing resources to thrive in their communities.
