The way we sense, interpret, and regulate signals within our body across conscious and unconscious levels is called interoception. This experience is considered the sixth sense. Techniques for hacking into the interoceptive feedback loop in order to regulate the nervous system and fuel resilience is the novel approach being explored in this investigation. Physically accessing interoceptive neural circuits via Vagus Nerve stimulation is one such area of research for tapping into the interoceptive feedback loop. Connecting to sensory awareness through mindfulness techniques is another way to change the interoceptive signals in the feedback loop. Finally, emotional awareness and reappraisal is another suggested approach to hack into the interoceptive process. This dissertation introduces the idea of using these techniques to build the resilience of an autonomic nervous system that is chronically under stress. The impact of vicarious trauma and prevalence of burnout are a significant problem for many frontline helpers including the therapist population. Majority of current resilience training programs advocate in favor of long-term habits of self-care. The opportunity with interoceptive techniques and the developed program is an immediate experience at the interface of body, mind, and emotional levels of interoception. This is significant because current interventions for nervous system regulation are limited and rely on medical means of control or a therapeutic relationship. This program, Kit for Interoceptive Training (KIT) uses self-assisted interoceptive techniques and introduces a quicker way to decrease symptomology. The study followed a program evaluation model in which KIT was developed by the researcher after a thorough literature review and then evaluated by experts in the field. Results indicated that an interoception curriculum would be very useful and is gravely understudied as the underlying factor in the development of symptoms and pathology across physical and psychological disorders. Clinical use of interoceptive techniques has yet to be developed. This curriculum is a useful step towards this goal. Further research and improved understanding of interoceptive processes is required to produce treatments and long-term change.
