The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a deeper understanding of parent perspectives in the child welfare system, by exploring parent experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five parents who had current or previous experience with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The interview explored the following areas: experience with caseworkers, overall perspectives of DCFS, services and case plan, cultural humility, areas for DCFS to improve and resiliency. Findings centered around positive and negative themes. Key positive themes included: open dialogue, independence, completing case plans, and accountability. Negative themes included: treatment by caseworkers, family separation, and barriers to reunifying families. Future research should consider including parents, caseworkers, supervisors, and administrators perspectives. Implications for social work practice, policy and research are provided.
