This project is influenced by critical theory and examines the gender journeys and identity ruptures faced by nonbinary and genderqueer millennials. I conducted semi-structured interviews with 13 nonbinary adults between the ages of 24 and 40, inquiring about their experiences discovering possibilities beyond the traditional gender binary and what role available cultural resources and gender discourse played in their identity work. I used reflexive thematic analysis to situate myself in the analysis and build themes informed by both the literature and my encounters with the research itself as a genderqueer researcher. Participants' gender journeys were marked by (1.) an unnamed discomfort in their realization of their difference in childhood and adolescence, (2.) a spark or rupture that helped them become aware of gender possibilities outside of the binary, (3.) active identity work, (4.) re-emergence, and (5.) navigating encounters in a new way as a nonbinary person. Implications of this research project point to the importance of reflective space, evolving language, supportive social circles, media representation of nonbinary characters who are not defined solely by their gender identity, and the illustration of queer joy in these representations.
