As the population of older adults, and especially those aged 80 and older, continues to expand, it is imperative that we understand the unique care needs of this population. The oldest old age group is highly understudied, and though this group is at the greatest risk of cognitive decline, little is known about the intersection of cognitive and psychological health among this population, including the topic of worry. While some research has indicated that oldest old adults may experience increased worry compared to younger older adults, no research has sought to understand why. The current study sought to determine whether oldest old adults experience increased worry and test existing cognitive models of worry among older adults to determine whether changes in executive functioning as individuals age contribute to increased worry among the oldest old. A total of 97 participants (M age = 74.49; range = 60 to 89 years) completed self-report questionnaires including the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Geriatric Anxiety Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Cognitive Problems and Strategies Assessment, as well as neurocognitive measures including the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status Update, Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Color-Word Interference Test, and Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. A series of cross-sectional and predictive analyses were conducted to test the primary hypotheses. Results of two-way ANOVA analyses found no significant differences in worry or anxiety severity based on age group (i.e., 60s, 70s, 80s). Further, measures of executive functioning did not uniquely predict anxiety or worry severity when assessed via multiple regression analyses. Overall, no age differences in worry or anxiety severity were found among older adults, and no evidence was found to support changes in executive functioning as a contributor to worry presentation in late life. However, limitations included lack of demographic diversity, small sample size, and limited measurement of executive functioning. Further research is warranted to determine if individuals with greater risk factors for cognitive decline or pathological worry (e.g., low socioeconomic status, poor health status) may demonstrate different patterns of worry development as they age.
