Burnout has become increasingly prevalent among helping professionals, and specifically social workers, in recent years (Evans et al., 2021; Siebert, 2005). Even more concerning are recent findings indicating that burnout symptoms among social workers are appearing as early as their fourth year of a higher education program (le Roux et al., 2018; Steyn & Hall, 2018). This trend highlights the need to move beyond mere identification of symptoms to proactive strategies that promote resilience and well-being, especially in light of continued challenges related to the pandemic. One potential avenue for building resilience among social work students is through the promotion of extra-curricular engagement. An integrative review of the literature indicates that extra-curricular engagement may provide students with valuable skills that can help mitigate burnout (Foley et al., 2022; Gerrard & Billington, 2014). Furthermore, there is some evidence that mitigating burnout among social work students may reduce the risk of future burnout (Robins et al., 2018). Further research is needed to explore the potential mechanisms by which extra-curricular engagement may reduce burnout risk and what specific characteristics are important for the development of resiliency.
