Two longitudinal pilot studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the Transcendental Meditation® technique on stress and burnout levels for elite esport athletes.Subjects: The first study measured 11 members of a League of Legends European Championship (LEC) team and their academy team. The Perceived Stress Scale and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire were used along with Heart Rate Variability measurements and semi-structured interviews.The second study measured 8 members from 2 LEC teams. The Perceived Stress Scale and Athlete Burnout Questionnaire were administered along with semi-structured interviews that were analyzed thematically.In both studies, participants learned an effortless mental technique designed for transcending called the Transcendental Meditation technique (TM®). This technique has been seen to lower perceived stress and burnout, while improving many intelligence factors. For analysis, participants were split into two groups, Low TM and High TM, based on their participation in the intervention.Results: In the first study, the High TM group showed large effect sizes for decreases in the Perceived Stress Scale and the reduced sense of accomplishment and sport devaluation subscales. A medium effect size was found for a decrease in the emotional/physical exhaustion subscale for the High TM group. Change scores in the second study showed a similar pattern for all measures except the sport devaluation subscale, which did not change.Semi-structured interviews in the second study were analyzed using thematic analysis, identifying three themes and one subtheme. The first theme, the Drive to Grind, encompasses the voiced desire, need, and impact of the athletes' long training hours. Its subtheme, Becoming a Boomer, highlighted a player-driven theory for why players retire early. The second theme, Resistance to Tilt, focuses on the necessity of developing emotional balance and resiliency. The third theme, Mental Performance, covers the important mental qualities for peak performance in League of Legends.Results from both studies indicate that the High TM groups demonstrated greater resilience to stress and burnout while improving self-reported mental qualities of performance.
