This thesis examines discussions (N = 445848 posts and comments) in two Reddit forums (subreddits) that emerged in response to the anti-feminist, conspiratorial, far-right discourse around Red Pilling. Specifically, I analyze the r/TheBluePill (TBP, n = 67,131) and r/ThePurplePill (PPD, n = 378,717) subreddits using a mixed-method approach combining in-depth qualitative reading with computational text analysis. The analysis presented is based in theories of encoding/decoding, selective exposure, satire, and symbolic hijacking. My analysis demonstrates how users in each subreddit have used different communicative strategies; TBP users utilized satire to recontextualize, contest, and reject misogynistic messages, while PPD users provided a more deliberative space for debate in favor or against the Red-Pill agenda. My comparison of resisting (TBP) and negotiating (PPD) discursive strategies as response to the dominant discourse prevalent in red pill subreddits contributes to theoretical discussions of misinformation online, and public spheres built to fight against it.
