Despite the long-observed male preponderance in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), research on sex differences in the behavioral phenotype ASD has remained largely complex and inconclusive. The present study sought to examine sex differences in adolescents with high functioning autism (HFA), as measured by the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). In line with current scientific literature, HFA is used to identify individuals with ASD without accompanying intellectual impairment (de Giambattista et al., 2021; Hiller et al., 2014). The current study examined the presence of sex differences within the domains of intellectual ability, social and communication, and repetitive and restrictive behaviors and interests for the study's full participant sample, including the full range of Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) scores (FSIQ Range: 47-138) and the HFA group (FSIQ > 85). Results suggest that there are significant sex differences in ASD regarding social communication abilities after controlling for intellectual ability. Sex differences in social communication were not found when examining only participants in the HFA group (FSIQ > 85). No sex differences were found in terms of intellectual ability or repetitive and restricted behaviors and interests within the full participant sample or HFA group. Overall, findings suggest subtle, yet potentially meaningful, differences in the phenotypic expression of autism symptoms between males and females. Findings further support intellectual functioning as a moderator for sex differences in the diagnosis of ASD. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
