Enhancing the clinical performance of clinical psychology trainees in their provision of services to clients has been identified by this study as of great essence to training and medical institutions. However, for these institutions to improve clinical performance, they must identify factors affecting the trainees. As a result, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between high stress levels and poor sleep quality and its impact on clinical performance among graduate students. The researcher employed a mixed method for data collection through surveys (quantitative) and focus group discussions (qualitative) to provide a balanced and complete analysis of the research questions. The study's target population comprised doctorate students of clinical psychology in various higher learning institutions in the United States, and a sample size of 61 participants (45 females and 16 males). According to the study's findings, the participants' total mean scores of the Perceived Stress Scale is 20(SD=5.5), with a minimum score of 7 and a maximum score of 37 and the total mean for the Medical Outcome Sleep Scale was 23(SD=4.6) with a minimum score of 14 and a maximum of 34. The hypothesis was then tested to see if participants that sleep better are less stressed. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used, and the results indicated that the correlation is highly positive and significant on 5 % level of alpha r = .280, N = 61, p = .029), providing evidence of a positive relationship between quality of sleep and lower stress level. The study further identified the confirmed impact of high stress levels and poor sleep quality on clinical performance, which included reduced productivity and poor clinical performance. In conclusion, the study underlines the need for administrators and policymakers in the training and medical institutions to develop a more practical approach with long-lasting strategies that would not only help students to manage academic stressors but also prevent them altogether, improving their sleep quality and clinical performance.
