The lack of cultural rites of passage leaves many women at a loss in navigating their journey toward individuation, Carl G. Jung's term for wholeness and self-realization in midlife. This thesis proposes framing midlife transitions as calls for initiation through the stages of the heroine's journey. In exploring the unique feminist depth psychological perspective on the path to individuation, this study focuses on the spiraling stages of the heroine's journey as a framework for understanding psychological transitions. The research applies a qualitative, hermeneutic review of the literature to investigate the internal psychological processes involved in individuation and the aspects of initiatory experiences that can support this psychic growth. The heuristic findings exploring personal initiatory experiences of the author further contribute to this study by demonstrating ways in which depth techniques such as dream work, active imagination, and sand play within a trusting therapeutic relationship can support individuation.
