This study examined the impact of viewing a pre-recorded social justice psychoeducational message, read by an African American minister, on mental health stigma/self-stigma and mental health awareness among older Black adult self-identified churchgoers. The message, which contained information on systemic racism, was designed to assess whether its inclusion would influence changes in mental health stigma/self-stigma, measured by the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale, and mental health awareness, measured by the Mental Health Literacy Scale. The video was made available to the participants, and the study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the message in increasing mental health awareness and decreasing mental health stigma/self-stigma within this demographic. The research highlights the significance of socio-cultural and religious factors in the development of psychoeducational programs intended to increase mental health awareness and reduce stigma/self-stigma among members of the Black community who may use the Christian religion as a coping mechanism. The sample for this study consisted of 34 participants, predominantly female, with a majority aged between 66 and 75 years, and most were retired. The Self-stigma of Seeking Help scale and the Mental Health Literacy Scale were used as pre- and post-intervention measures to assess changes in stigma and awareness. The results of the analysis, which included a repeated-measures ANOVA to test the hypothesis that the psychoeducational message would independently affect mental health awareness and stigma. The findings revealed a statistically significant decrease in mental health literacy scores post-intervention, indicating increased awareness. Interestingly, while no significant change was observed in overall self-stigma scores, a significant reduction was found in stigma-related items on the Mental Health Literacy Scale post-intervention, with participants scoring lower on these items after viewing the presentation, suggesting a positive impact of the intervention on specific stigma aspects. The study also explored the potential interactive effect of the minister's credibility on perceived message relevance, finding that while the Perceived Message Relevance Scale was a significant covariate for mental health literacy, it did not significantly affect stigma items on the Mental Health Literacy Scale.
