The problem addressed by this research study was whether the lived experience of marital satisfaction was related to emotional regulation in OIF/OEF/ND veterans separated from service with no service connected injury or illness at the time of separation. The purpose of the qualititative phenomenological study was to determine if the veteran's emotion regulation (ER) is related to their marital satisfaction (MS). The guiding theoretical framework for this study was the biopsychosocial model, which states that there are biological, psychological, and social influences over a person's health in disproportionate measures at a given time. Qualitative empirical phenomenological analysis was utilized to determine if a relationship existed between ER and MS. A convenience sample of 7 participants was recruited through several private online veteran forums and veteran sites. The research questions were: Is there a relationship between MS and ER in the identified population? What is the experience of MS in the identified population? What is the experience of ER in the identified population? Results indicated a connection between MS and ER. Two respondents showed low MS and ER and 5 respondents showed moderate to high levels of MS and ER. The experience of MS for 2 respondents was poor, while the experience of MS was moderate to high for the other 5. The experience of ER was poor for 2 respondents, moderate for 4 respondents, and high for 1 respondent. Conclusions: Emotion regulation and marital satisfaction are related in this population, and a substantial proportion of that population is need of psychological assistance. Implications for further research and practice: a mixed method study that utilizes both open ended questions and data-driven measures could be used. Therapists should be made aware of this demographic and their needs and be prepared to engage them in their communities. A debriefing program could be added to the TAP with the assistance of LMFTs to assist service members and their partners with the transition from service to civilian life. Further, a program could be developed for this demographic, based on FOCUS, which could teach resiliency, communications skills, and problem solving skills to former service members.
