Athletes of all backgrounds and levels of play use social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. Rates of social media use have grown exponentially in the past 10-15 years as people around the world, including athletes, seek to connect the people and the world around them. NCAA college athletes are no different and regularly use social media to connect with friends, family, teammates, fans, as well as market themselves and earn profit based on their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). In Part I, a theoretical overview, social media's developmental considerations, negative impacts, positive aspects, and future implications for research and practice in the field of clinical sport psychology are identified and explored. Part II is a complete qualitative research study which examined how social media use impacted collegiate athletes. Namely, the study sought to illuminate the specific emotional, psychological, and social impacts of social media use and the ramifications of ongoing changes to NCAA legislation. This study qualitatively examined the experiences of highly visible collegiate athletes, using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) methodology, to address how social media use impacts collegiate athlete Complete Mental Health (Keyes, 2005) in order to inform future research and practice for sport psychologists.
