Passion in sport is a powerful motivator for athletes and is linked to the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. Harmonious passion (HP) tends to have a positive effect on coach-athlete relationships (CARs) while obsessive passion (OP) tends to influence relationships negatively. Clarification of how coaches' passion affects athletes' passion and the way athletes perceive CAR is needed. Moreover, looking into whether this relationship is similar among coach-athlete dyads from other cultures is also needed. The current study examined cultural differences (e.g., American and Lebanese) in the relationships between coach passion and athlete passion, and coach passion and the quality of CAR among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 (D1) collegiate athletes and their coaches. Participants included 20 coaches (USA n = 11, Lebanese n = 9) and 97 athletes (USA n = 45, Lebanese n = 52). Both coaches and athletes answered the Passion Scale and athletes answered the Coach-Athlete Relationship questionnaire. Several analyses were conducted to determine the results of this study including: bivariate correlations of coach passion and athlete passion and coach passion and CAR and athlete's perception of their coach's passion and CAR. Independent t-tests compared passion levels among American and Lebanese coaches and athletes. Lastly, Z scores were used to compare the two cultures' passion and CAR. Results showed that Lebanese athletes had significantly higher OP than American athletes. Similarly, Lebanese coaches had significantly higher OP than American coaches. Findings from a separate correlation showed that there was a positive correlation between American coaches' and athletes' OP but not among Lebanese dyads. Despite this difference, Z scores indicated that the correlations were not significantly different between the cultures. This study suggests that there may be differences in OP levels between American and Lebanese cultures, although further investigation is needed to identify if coaches' OP has a different relationship to athletes' OP and CAR among the Lebanese population.
