Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are one of the most researched subjects in sports medicine due to their impact on the well-being of the individual as well as their high prevalence in athletics. When reviewing the mechanism of injury, risk factors for primary ACL tears, long-term effects, risk factors for secondary ACL tears, and return to sport (RTS) guidelines of ACL injuries; the necessity for a test battery to return to sport becomes evident. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ACL RTS test batteries being used by athletic trainers at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanctioned institutions in Illinois and the components of those test batteries. This study used a survey to determine if athletic trainers at the selected institutions have a current RTS test battery that may include time, patient reported outcomes measures, clinician discretion, physician clearance, or objective measurements. This study found that there were more athletic trainers who used objective measurements compared to subjective measurements. The participants in this study were also more likely to use three or more objective measurements compared to two or less objective measurements. Only 8 of the 19 participants used all five criteria (time, patient reported outcomes, clinician discretion, physician clearance, and objective measurements). Overall, the findings of this study showed great variability in RTS test batteries after ACL reconstruction administered by athletic trainers across NCAA sanctioned schools in Illinois.
