At the selected HBCU, the researcher investigated the effectiveness of the mental health process is supported as it pertains to the student athletes on the baseball team. The primary research question was: How effective is the mental health support of student athletes at a selected HBCU? The sub-questions for research include: 1) How effective are the current processes in the support of student athletes' mental health? 2) How is the mental health of injured players supported post injury? Through the use of an anonymous online survey and interviews, the key findings showed that student athletes on the selected baseball team have internal barriers that they experience which might hold them back from seeking out mental health assistance, feelings of being overwhelmed when navigating class schedules, practices, and in season games. Upon injury, student athletes on the selected baseball team are motivated to return to play and feel that coaches and athletic trainers have their best interest in mind when making decisions to return to play after an injury has been sustained. It is my recommendation through this research, that the selected HBCU should consider having a dedicated sports psychologist and/or a group of trained professionals that may assist in the mental health process to student athletes that are involved in athletics at the NCAA Division1 level. Other recommendations include the marketing of mental health initiatives on campus at the selected HBCU, professional development for staff members on mental health training, mental health staff on campus should routinely meet with the baseball program to create a harmonious relationship with the baseball student athletes at the selected HBCU. Another recommendation will be to have the mental health staff should be considered as a part of the return to play protocol for student athletes who have suffered injuries.
