This study discusses the role of the current President of China, Xi Jinping in the de facto quest for Chinese hegemony. It tries to analyse China's policies and programmes in the international system through a qualitative method of analysis. It examines China's hard and soft power capabilities in the South China Sea, its military expenditure and influence, the "one China, two systems" policy towards Taiwan, the creation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), China's cultural assimilation, the new Chinese foreign policy, China's political attraction, extension of Scholarship Schemes to developing countries and a better balance of trade and economic development. The study will also examine the role of China in consensus building and international cooperation. This primarily focuses on China's contributions to the UN and BRICS. The United States of America (USA) has enjoyed the enviable position as a hegemon and theonly superpower in world affairs. Contrarily, China has become proactive in international affairs since Xi Jinping took over the reins of leadership. This has had far- reaching implications and consequences on the international system and the world at large. The study employs a quantitative method of analysis to critically examine China's quest for hegemony under Xi Jinping. Some analysts like Nye (2010), have argued that there is a decline in US influence in the international arena. Therefore, Policymakers should study China's economic, military, political, technological blueprints, and strategies. Hence, this research will serve as a reference point to planners and policymakers in unlocking the hard and soft power capabilities of China and the indicators of its quest for hegemony. This would enable them to formulate policies to mitigate the negative effects of future Chinese policy decisions.
