By recreating a photographic moment on canvas, the artist creates a temporal liminal space for the audience to explore their psychology triggered by historical photographic imagery. In the essay, the author explains the relationship between the historical photographs and the present. As well as the major influences of the artist, such as the study of collective traumatic memory in Richter's work and the importance of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock to the artist's practice. The artist's work deals with major traumatic historic events such as the 'Spanish Flu', World War II and Chinese contemporary history.Key words: History, Historical Imagery, Photography, Painting, Trompe-L'oeil, Gerhard Richter, Alfred Hitchcock, Collective traumatic experience.
