The phenomenon of ageism is a persistent and present day problem. In this hermeneutic phenomenological study, all participants experienced ageism responses by society. Some of the reactions to ageism were anger or agitation, while others simply decided to ignore ageism or disassociate themselves from the situation. Regardless of their response, the experience of ageism is present in many walks of society, from the medical field, social services field, industries, and advertising. Three other main categories that developed from these interviews were successful ageing, active engagement, and social support. Successful ageing not being the absence of the changes that ageing can bring but rather the adapting to the process of ageing. Active engagement being a continued desire to remain engaged with activity and society in whatever form the individual finds meaning. Social support being a crucial factor in maintaining connection with others and obtaining a sense of support from a very of sources. With these factors then offering suggestions to encourage change and promote social work education.
