Social support can benefit people mentally, physically, and relationally. Although social support has been traditionally provided by people in one's social networks mainly via face-to-face communications, online communities allow one to seek and receive support from broader audiences. Social support seekers are active agents whose behaviors may affect the support they receive. This dissertation aims to bring to light the associations between the social support seekers' behaviors and the support received in online communities. This study first randomly sampled posts and comments data from five communities on Reddit: r/Alcoholism, r/Depression, r/GriefSupport, r/relationships, and r/WeightLossAdvice. The social support seeking behaviors examined include whether a post was seeking support, directly seeking support, expressing emotions, thoughtfully selecting providers, using flair, requesting urgent support, and the number of comments from the original poster. The social support examined includes informational support and emotional support provided in the comments. Machine learning techniques and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) were used to measure these behaviors and social support. Results revealed the following associations: "the number of comments from the original poster" is positively related to both the amount social support received; "Directly seeking support" is positively related to the amount of informational support received whereas "expressing positive emotions" and "thoughtfully selecting providers" are negatively related to the amount of informational support received; "directly seeking support" is negatively related to the amount of emotional support received whereas "expressing positive emotions" is positively related to the amount of emotional support received. Findings have several potential contributions. First, to the practice, users of online communities can better understand which behaviors are associated with the amount of informational support/emotional support received, and they could apply these behaviors to better seek online social support; the moderators of online communities can add norms/rules based on the findings of this study to better guide the users on social support seeking and provision. Second, theoretically, this dissertation could be an example of applying the "social-emotional paradigm" to information science studies (Worrall, Cappello, & Osolen, 2021). Third, for the future research, the findings of this study might be further tested in experimental settings to establish causal relationships between support seeking behaviors and social support received.
