This thesis aims to measure and enhance spatial thinking skills in university-level students. Individuals with strong spatial thinking skills are better able to interpret information, make decisions, and solve problems, all of which are crucial for tackling environmental issues such as species conservation. Much of the research on spatial thinking has focused on location, however other spatial thinking abilities are also important. This thesis explored spatial thinking using the sub-discipline of biogeography to address the seven spatial thinking concepts: location, distance, direction, distribution, pattern, association, and hierarchy. A topic in biogeography was chosen because of the discipline's scarce visibility within geography and the ability to use a topic that could address a conservation problem. A correlative species distribution model was chosen to highlight a conservation problem and because it made it possible to include all spatial thinking concepts chosen. University students in Singapore were then received a two-part assessment using the output of species distribution models of whale shark current and potential habitat suitability under a specific climate change scenario. Of the students that participated, 72% correctly identified six of the seven spatial concepts and 61% correctly applied four of the seven spatial concepts in the assessment. Hierarchy was the most challenging spatial concept for students. This thesis demonstrates the usefulness and the importance of incorporating biogeographic concepts in education to enhance spatial thinking.
