Shared leadership involves the dynamic exchange of leadership in groups. Although research clearly demonstrates that shared leadership is positively related to several group outcomes, including effectiveness (Pearce, Manz & Sims, 2014; Wang, Waldman & Zhang, 2014), far less is known about the antecedents of shared leadership. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to shed light on the antecedents of shared leadership. More specifically, I proffer that hierarchical leaders' integrity, diversity orientation, self-leadership and empowering leadership are powerful precursors of shared leadership in groups. Questionnaire data was collected from 350 individuals, from 51 teams, at a large-scale farming operation headquartered in Nebraska, USA. Utilizing structural equation modeling, integrity, self-leadership and empowering leadership were found to be significantly related to the display of shared leadership. Moreover, empowering leadership was found to mediate the relationship between self-leadership and shared leadership. In sum, this study advances our knowledge of the antecedents of shared leadership in groups. Based on the results, I provide practical advice for leadership training and educational programs seeking to promote shared leadership, as well as guidance for future research in the general ken.
