Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 2005.

The intended purpose of this thesis is to engage in a critical social analysis of the sport and culture of bodybuilding. To bring critical and theoretical insight to bear as to the virtues and vices of this obscure, yet extremely relevant sub-culture. In this particular context, the concept of sub-culture refers to distinct behavioral and lifestyle patterns that are linked to, or associated with a group of people. The bodybuilding culture is no different in that it possesses all of the tenets of a sub-cultural existence. Unlike other subcultures however, the sport of competitive bodybuilding, which is the most definitive practice within the culture, exists in virtual obscurity in comparison to its counterpart sub-cultures (i.e., gay & lesbian culture, religious culture, popular culture, etc.). Many attribute this cultural subjugation to a well-deserved stigma associated with a long history of ritualistic drug use within the sport. In spite of this liability this research attempts to address the ways in which such a culture has the potential to positively affect the aggregate global society. I attempt to argue that an in-depth exploration of this sub-culture-one that accents its best virtues and attenuates its worst vices-could have a profound effect on the aggregate in terms of the ways in which we approach fitness, bodybuilding and other health-related issues. Given the rise in health-related diseases, and the increasing prevalence of what the Center for Disease Control calls the "Twin Epidemics" of obesity and diabetes, and their threat to "overwhelm the health care system," this particular kind of study, and an examination of the role that bodybuilders could potentially play in combating this epidemic, is sufficiently warranted.
