Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2021.
Includes bibliographical references
Utilizing hermeneutic methodology, this thesis explores cis male relationships with sex workers in order to provide greater insight into men's selfobject needs and psychological landscapes. The author uses a self psychology framework to analyze how erotic transference and eroticized transference arise in men's interactions with sex workers. The demands of masculinity, sex work, and self psychology concepts of mirroring and selfobject needs are presented and analyzed to increase an understanding of the psychological complexity found in cis men's relationships with sex workers. Using hermeneutic and heuristic research, the author finds unforgiving standards of masculinity in American patriarchal culture, leading to inevitable distress. Further, the author presents how cis men's relationships to sex workers provides emotional support and consistency, and it reinforces clients' self-concepts of their masculine identity. These sex workers' relationships provide reparative selfobject mirroring experiences parallel to the reparative experiences encountered in client-therapist relationships.
