A field trial was conducted during 1998 - 2000 at the orchard of the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam to study the effect of planting density and graded levels of nutrients on growth and yield in tissue culture banana cv. Robusta (AAA). The planting density was increased to 50 and 100 per cent over conventional planting by planting of three and four plants per hill respectively. Based on the number of plants planted in a hill, 100, 75 and 50 per cent of the recommended fertilizer dose (200:60:300 grams of NPK / plant) were adopted.Among the treatments, the treatment with one plant per hill (T7) i.e. planting of one plant per hill at 1.8 x 1.8 m spacing with 200 : 60 : 300 grams of NPK per hill (100 per cent of the recommended fertilizer dose) produced maximum mean bunch weight of 18.35 kg and total yield of 52.19 tons per hectare. The treatment with one plant per hill registered good quality traits of fruits viz., TSS, total sugars, reducing sugars, non - reducing sugars, acidity and ascorbic acid. Sigatoka leaf spot incidence was high as population density increased while nematode incidence was not influenced by plant density. Highest net profit of Rs. 2,74,297.60 was obtained from the treatment with one plant per hill (T7) i.e. planting of one plant per hill at 1.8 x 1.8 m spacing receiving 100 per cent of the recommended fertilizer dose (200 : 60 : 300 grams of NPK per hill) and accommodating 3086 plants per hectare. The benefit cost ratio was highest (1 : 2.73) in this treatment followed by T3 (three plants per hill at 1.8 x 3.6 m spacing with 50 per cent of the fertilizer dose) which was 1 : 1.27. The lowest benefit - cost ratio was obtained in T4 (four plants per hill at 1.8 x 3.6 m spacing with 100 per cent of the fertilizer dose) which was 1 : 1.01.
